BACKGROUND
INFORMATION
before, Macedon (Macedonia) was full of herders and consisted of individual clans
started to get influenced by Greek city-states through trade
King Philip II (reigned 359-336 B.C.E.) built a powerful army that replaced clans
took control of Macedon and wanted to take over the Greece and Persian empires
began to add territory in northern Greece (poleis couldn't trust each other, so they didn't put up much resistance)
took control of Greece and wanted to take over Persia, but was assassinated in 336 B.C.E.
ALEXANDER THE GREAT
son of Philip II
at young age, started to build huge army to take over Persia
great leader/strategist and army was disciplined and determined
by 331 B.C.E., he took control of Ionia and Anatolia (Turkey), Syria, Palestine, Egypt, and Mesopotamia
invaded Persia and became king in 330 B.C.E.
expanded empire to Punjab, India, but his troops didn't want to go farther from home
returned to Mesopotamia and had celebrations
got ill and died at a young age (he wasn't able to expand empire further)
